There are plenty of once-in-a-lifetime experiences to uncover in Africa. Mountain gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is a thrilling experience that not only transforms the lives of those fortunate enough to participate, but also supports ongoing preservation of these majestic creatures. Be one of only eight people per day who are granted permits to trek among each gorilla family. Go safari hopping and get up close, stunning views of the Big 5. Victoria Falls, the largest curtain of falling water in the world, is a spectacular sight which is at its peak from February to May. From its position on the southwest coast of South Africa, Cape Town is surrounded with unique experiences. Take the cable car up to Table Mountain, visit beaches, vineyards and botanical gardens, have an up close encounter with the penguins at Boulder Beach or visit an alpaca farm. Venture to Cape of Good Hope at the most southwestern point of the African continent. Tour Robben Island; where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for many years. Former inmates of the infamous prison help you to understand the struggle against apartheid and act as your tour guide.
One of the New Seven Wonders of the World, Machu Picchu gives travelers a look at ancient worlds past. Set out on a tour where you’ll ascend to the Lost City in the Clouds aboard the Vistadome train. You can alternately take a bus up and down the 2,000’ high slope or you can climb the strenuous path and take in the extraordinary views along the way. Machu Picchu is not littered with the explanatory signs we are used to at most national parks. For information about the ruins find the excellent Museo de Sitio Chavez Ballon tucked at the end of a long dirt road near the base.
If a vacation to the Galapagos Islands wasn’t on your bucket list before it should be. Get ready to stroll among the giant tortoises and land iguanas and play alongside the fur seals. Grab your binoculars to check out the elusive Blue-Footed Booby and the Flightless Cormorant. There’s no shortage of wildlife on this archipelago.
